The EPA’s Safe Drinking Water standards for “water with no known health risks” weigh the health impacts of contaminants vs. the cost for public water treatment plants to provide 100% contaminant-free water. Low levels of harmful contaminants, such as arsenic, lead and disinfection byproducts, are allowed to remain in our drinking water. However, exposure to even very low levels of contaminants can cause long-term health issues.
